Free trading journal: what it must contain (and where to get one in 2026)

Every profitable trader keeps a journal. But a badly designed journal is busywork: you fill in boxes and nothing changes. Here's what a journal must contain to make you improve, and an honest tour of the free options.

Features and limits as observed in July 2026.

What a good journal must track

Four layers, in order of importance:

  1. The facts: instrument, direction, size, entry/exit, SL/TP, net P&L (with commissions and swap).
  2. The decision: which setup, which checklist items, was it in your plan?
  3. The emotional state: calm, FOMO, revenge, tired. The layer 90% of journals ignore, and where the leaks hide.
  4. The review: a journal you never re-read is a diary. You need a review that surfaces patterns.

Excel or Notion: free, but everything is on you

A spreadsheet handles layer 1 fine. Layers 2 and 3 demand a logging discipline almost nobody sustains, and layer 4 doesn't exist: you are the analyst, every Sunday, if you have the energy left. Free in money, expensive in willpower.

What TradeDiscipline offers for free

The free plan covers all four layers, no credit card:

  • Full journal: CSV import (1/day), manual trades, calendar, equity curve, analytics, on 1 account.
  • 1 free discovery AI analysis: your discipline score, plan violations and patterns, computed for you.
  • 1 AI-structured strategy: describe it in plain language, it becomes checkable rules.
  • Leaderboard, challenges and economic calendar included.

The limits are real and stated: one account, one import a day, one discovery AI analysis. It's a diagnosis, not a daily coach.

When a paid journal is worth it

Two signals: logging becomes the bottleneck (automatic sync for MT4/MT5, cTrader, NinjaTrader, TradingView or Tradovate removes all manual entry), or you want to go from weekly diagnosis to daily coaching (analysis every morning, an AI coach that knows your trades). Until then, free is enough: start here.
