FTMO challenge: the tracking that keeps you from blowing it

A prop-firm challenge is almost never lost on strategy. It's lost on the rules: a daily limit hit during a tilt episode, a drawdown you forgot was there. Here's how to track it seriously. (We're not affiliated with any prop firm; FTMO is the example here; the principles apply to all of them.)

Know your rules exactly, not roughly

At FTMO, typical values are ~5% max daily loss and ~10% max total loss (check the current rules when you buy; they evolve). Two subtleties that fail profitable traders:

  • Balance or equity? The daily limit is often measured on equity: an open trade in floating loss can fail you without ever closing.
  • Static or trailing? FTMO uses a static max loss, but other firms use a trailing drawdown that rises with your equity peak. Confusing the two costs accounts.

The three classic ways to blow a challenge

  1. Revenge after a morning loss. You're at −3% daily, 2% left. One impulsive "win it back" trade and it's over. The daily limit almost always dies late in the session.
  2. Oversizing to finish fast. In most recent formats the profit target has no tight deadline; your impatience does.
  3. Relaxing once in profit. You're at +7%, you loosen up, give back 4% in two days and the spiral starts.

Track your distance to the limits live, not in your head

Mental math mid-session doesn't work, least of all in tilt, which is exactly when you need it. You need a tool that permanently shows: daily loss remaining, distance to drawdown, progress to target.

TradeDiscipline models these rules per account (profit target, daily loss, static or trailing drawdown) with 1-click templates for common firms. On Premium, the challenge guardian pushes an alert before you touch a limit, and your trades arrive automatically via MT4/MT5 sync: tracking no longer depends on your logging discipline at the worst moment.

The journal: your insurance for the funded account

Passing the challenge is half the job: most funded accounts are lost in the following months, to the same mistakes. Journaling during the challenge (setups, emotions, discipline score) tells you how you passed, and whether it's repeatable. The journal and 1 discovery AI analysis are free, no card: start before your challenge.
