The psychology of surviving a losing streak

Even a solid edge produces losing streaks. With a 50% win rate, a run of five or six losses is statistically routine. The danger isn't the streak, it's what it does to your behaviour.

What a streak does to you

After several losses you start to doubt your system, size up to "catch up", or abandon your rules entirely. This is exactly backwards: a streak is when discipline matters most, not least.

How to ride it out

  1. Cut size, not corners. If anything, trade smaller until confidence returns. Never bigger.
  2. Judge process, not outcome. If you followed your plan, it was a good trade even if it lost. Score that separately from P&L.
  3. Zoom out. Ten trades is noise. Look at 50–100 to see whether your edge is actually broken or just variance.

Tracking a discipline score independent of profit lets you see that you're still doing the right things during a drawdown: the reassurance that keeps you from blowing up. That separation is core to how TradeDiscipline works.

Risk disclosure: TradeDiscipline is a trading journal, a tracking and discipline tool: not a broker, and not an investment adviser. Trading carries a risk of losing your capital whatever the instrument (stocks, indices, commodities, futures, forex, crypto-assets).

Futures and forex trading contains substantial risk and is not for every investor. An investor could potentially lose all or more than the initial investment. Risk capital is money that can be lost without jeopardizing ones' financial security or life style. Only risk capital should be used for trading and only those with sufficient risk capital should consider trading. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.
