How many trades per day? The limit that protects your best setup

Your best trades are often the first of the day. The ones that follow are mostly about catching up, keeping busy or getting even.

Look at your journal and rank your trades by position in the day: first, second, third and so on. For many traders the result is striking. The first trade is profitable. From the third or fourth onward, the curve flips.

Why later trades cost more

Your first trade comes from analysis done with a clear head, before the open. The later ones come from what happened since:

  • After a win, overconfidence: "I'm having a good day".
  • After a loss, the urge to win it back.
  • With nothing clear, boredom: you're in front of the screen, so you click.

None of these reasons is in your plan.

Setting your limit

There's no universal number, but there is a method: look at your history to find from which rank your trades become losers on average, and set your limit just before it. For most intraday traders it lands between 2 and 4 trades a day.

Making it non-negotiable

A limit you can break "just this once" isn't a limit. Write it into your strategy, and decide in advance what happens when it's reached: you close the platform, not just the tab.

What TradeDiscipline does

You set your maximum trades per day in your strategy. Your discipline score penalises every breach, and during your session the real-time guardrails warn you as you approach the limit. You also see, in numbers, what the trades beyond it cost you.
